About this deal

Sweat, dirt, and bacteria can accumulate in your workout clothes and leave an unpleasant odor, even after clothes have been removed or washed. Even if your exercise routine does not involve wind sprints or similarly sweaty activities, your workout clothes will likely soak up much more sweat than the rest of your wardrobe. This often requires a tougher laundry detergent than what you would use with your regular clothes. Many of the brands recommend pre-soaking athletic clothing with sports detergent prior to washing. While we found this extra step annoying, it was an effective way to clean the worst smelling clothes when a regular washing wasn’t doing the job. WASH CLOTHES INSIDE OUT Active Detergent explained that because technical and performance fabrics are most often made with manmade fibers woven tightly together, contaminants can get trapped deeper within the material. Bacteria caused by sweating trapped in the weave of the clothing produce bad odours. Most detergents mask odours by leaving soap residue on your clothing.

A new company, Active Detergent, gives an alternative to commodity laundry soap. Its namesake Active Wear detergent is made of an organic, plant-based enzyme formula that can penetrate the tighter weave of synthetic fibers found in performance clothing. Natural Laundry Detergent for ActivewearIf you have small loads or lightly soiled loads, or just wash things because they have been worn twice; try ½ ounce for a few loads. If you wash just a couple exercise items each day, try using 1/3 or ¼ oz. Because Sport-Wash® is super soluble, it disperses immediately even in cool water to maximize the use of washing time. It is also easy to spread a small amount in targeted areas. Use a small brush or a dauber to apply Sport-Wash® directly to armpits, cuffs, collars, or other problem areas. A targeted wash of a couple of otherwise “clean” garments may require as little as 1/8 ounce of Sport-Wash.

Keeping your workout clothes in top condition isn't just a matter of tossing them in the wash - the right detergent makes all the difference. Trust us, the damage from harsh chemicals can really impact the performance and longevity of your activewear. Plus, sweaty workouts mean that those clothes accumulate bacteria and odors that regular detergents just can't handle. Thankfully, using a specialized detergent can keep your gear fresh, clean, and ready for action! What to look for in a detergent for workout clothes If you want a high-performance, all-in-one detergent that will eliminate stains, sweat, and body odor without harsh additives, the WIN Sports Detergent is our top choice. It does a stellar job of getting rid of stubborn body odor smells without a lot of extra effort, like pre-soaking. With three different scents, it has something for everyone, whether you want some fragrance or none at all.Be sure to read all manufacturer’s washing instructions. But in general, a natural detergent can remove the sweat and smell from performance clothing and outerwear. Sport Suds is a favorite of the Inventory, PopSugar, and Verywell Fit, which all mention that it is the best “natural” option for sportswear. It’s also a favorite of Treeline Review editor Naomi Hudetz who has been using for years on her post-thru-hiking clothing. It’s available in several sizes including 40 loads and the more cost-effective 140 load tub. Look for detergents that are formulated specifically to launder your activewear and sports uniforms and can handle tough smells and stains.

I tested it out this month for a review with a pile of sweat-soaked clothes after a session at the climbing gym. I also washed a variety of technical clothing, a swimsuit, running shorts, and multiple T-shirts (cotton, synthetic, and merino wool) for the laundry detergent test. Laundry Detergent for Technical and Performance Clothing Once again, we thought the stink-removal was not as long-lasting as Hex Performance laundry detergent. We think that is a compromise some of our team was willing to make, especially those who wanted an eco-friendly option above all else.

How Sports Detergents Work

It continues to work by leaving behind active agents in the weave of the clothing, which means it keeps your sportswear fresh for longer than other detergents. Something like the above was apparently happening with one performance shirt I owned. As noted, it seemed to start stinking almost immediately after I began a workout. Depending on the load size in your washer, add one to two scoops of detergent. Wash on delicate cycle, and always wash with cold water — hot water can be bad for some technical fibers.
