The 8810 made its comeback at this year's Mobile World Congress (MWC) – 22 years after its original release in 1996. The original Nokia 8110’s cameo appearance in The Matrix (1999) remains the coolest bit of product placement ever. For the new 8110 Nokia has fully embraced the distinctive curved design that earned the original model its “banana phone” nickname.Mind you, this time, you’ll be able to let your friends know where you are via Facebook, as you traipse the festival showgrounds. Thus the Nokia 8110 4G was born, with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 205 dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage.

That phone was met with a wave of nostalgic glee, and the response to the 8110 has been similarly joyful. Other designers embracing the back-to-basic trend when it comes to mobile phones include Serbian studio Alter Ego Architects, which designed a concept for a 3D-printed phone with an interface that only features numbers and symbols. Now with 4G capabilities, the Nokia 8110 is even better and just as elegant as the previous edition.Apparently, in Nokia’s survey of Britain’s favourite 90s cultural landmarks, 20% named the original Nokia 8110 as their favourite tech device of the 1990s. Why would it be, with that highly usable keypad, where the keys fall easily under your fingers, keys which are nicely backlit so you can read them comfortably in any light?

Oftentimes the phone doesn’t appear to react when you press a button, so you’ll press it again; then it does respond, twice. The original had a microphone at the end of the slider, this doesn’t, probably because microphones have improved so much. If you make any changes to your booking you may lose your discount and be liable for the full amount. The finish is matte, unlike the yellow Nokia 3310 last year, but it’s none the less striking for that. But it was a 2G phone with limited features and quickly became categorized as ‘festival handset’ or ‘spare to keep in the car’.

The icon retains its unique look including the sliding mechanism and always sits wonderfully in the hand thanks to the curved design. The photos taken via the 2 megapixel camera can hardly be seen on it, which is bearable, since they are "almost useless" anyway.
